Summer Mango smoothies
Summer is here in earnest and I hate cooking for long hours. My cooking routine is simple. I wake up early, rustle up a simple meal and am out of the kitchen by 7:30 a.m. With the mercury soaring to 29 degrees and 30 degrees it is the best way to be.
But that is just one meal. For the rest of the day, me and the boys live on smoothies. I wonder why we did not do that earlier. When the kids were younger I often made milkshakes and lassis, but they used loads of sugar. After being diagnosed diabetic I try to avoid sugar, it is getting really bad press right now, being singled out as a major factor for heart disease, for allergies and if that were not enough, it also seems to be a trigger that makes cells cancerous.
The son senior ordered this smoothie maker from Amazon. Don’t you just love online purchasing? It is so convenient. And the family hopped on to the smoothie lifestyle.
The smoothies we make have no added sugar. Whatever sweetness they have come from the fruits we blend in, and sometimes we add organic honey. I’ve replaced dinner with smoothies. I hope to do the same with breakfast, but I need something solid in the morning, so I have two eggs too along with a smoothie. It is in keeping with my paleo diet. I would like to go diary free but that is hard. North India is predominantly the diary belt of India, and home made butter, yoghurt, rich whole milk and ghee are a way of life here.
So back to the smoothie
- 1 Mango peeled and de-seeded
- 2 Bananas (previously peeled, quartered and frozen)
- 2 tablespoons of yoghurt
- 1 tablespoon organic honey (optional)
- 4 cubes of ice
- A sprig of mint
- First put in the chopped fruit and mint into the blender
- Add the yoghurt and ice
- Taste it. If you feel it requires sweetness, add honey
- I will be adding more smoothie recipes in the next few weeks
