Gluten free onion biscuits

Posted by in Biscuits, Gluten free, Grain free, Healthy Living, Paleo, Vegan

The whole problem with a gluten free diet is that one misses crunchy snacks. Nah, that is not it. One misses crunchy anything on a gluten free diet. I really miss toasted crunchy bread crusts, namkeen mixes and rusk. It was the “missing crunch” that led me to making these absolutely paleo and really spicy onion biscuits. Right now I am in heaven, sipping my cup of tea, munching on spicy onion and coriander biscuits and watching the rain. Bliss The trick is to find a good replacement for flour…read more

Loquat Chutney

Posted by in Grain free, Healthy Living, Indian, Paleo

In April and May there are many fruit sellers with rehdis (push carts) that go from house to house puiled with this bright orange somewhat astringent fruit. They look lovely. Summer is the time when we crave tangy stuff, so I normally buy them and make a chutney out of them. The chutney is delicious, sweet and sour and goes well with a regular dal-chawal combo. I have even used the chutney to cook chicken but that recipe I’ll put up later.

Real vs Fake Food

Posted by in Autoimmune disease, Gluten free, Grain free, Healthy Living, Paleo

We’re going through a bit of a domestic crisis at home. My live in help is on leave. Earlier when this happened, food was ordered in or brought home from restaurants as a norm. Cooking meals at home was a big NO NO. But then I was low on energy earlier. And I had not developed a taste for real food. I did not even know the concept of real food. Let me explain this. Real means something genuine and authentic. We call it asli or khalis in Hindi/Urdu. It…read more

Paleo Date and Carrot Cake

Posted by in Arrowroot, Cakes, Gluten free, Grain free, Healthy Living

Like I said in my previous post, I cleared my carrot patch to make way for pumpkin and brinjal plants.  I got about 5 kg fresh carrots. My daughter-in-law lives in Dubai.  She keeps me well stocked in Mejdool dates. And I had just made my own cake mix. This cake mix is not made with nut meal or with coconut. I was getting bored of those flours but I am unwilling to go off my paleo diet.  So naturally I had to bake carrot and date bread.   I…read more

Panini Press and the Paleo Diet

Posted by in Chicken, Gluten free, Healthy Living

Maybe you are sick of the same old bread-butter-jam sandwich day after day. Maybe you are tired of cookng yourself an omelette or feeding the family a routine breakfast. Or maybe you want to impress the heck out of some dinner guests with a truly different dessert. May I introduce the panini press to you? Panini loosely means sandwich, something I had sadly waved goodbye once I switched to a paleo diet. Yes I love bread, to me bread butter is comfort food. So when Blogadda sent me the Hamilton…read more

Sweet Potato Bread

Posted by in Bread, Breakfast, Gluten free, Grain free, Healthy Living, Paleo, Sweet Potato

I’ve become a huge fan of sweet potatoes.  There was a time when all I knew was that we could roast them, squeeze a lemon on them, spice them up and have them as a snack. They are so versatile and forgive all kinds of tweaks you can give to them. This bread is made with sweet potato and arrowroot.  It is delicious.  The recipe is really simple and is adapted from the one I found on www.iquitsugar.com

Zucchini Bread Paleo

Posted by in Arrowroot, Bread, Breakfast, Gluten free, Grain free, Healthy Living, Low Carb, Paleo, Vegetables

I had two zucchini sitting in the fridge, which really had to be used. The problem with being alone at home is that one ends up eating left overs. The boys have gone away for four days and I had no intention of inflicting myself with zucchini day in and day out. Bread is a wonderful option isn’t it. Ever since I taught myself to bake grain free, I am a happy baker. There is nothing like bread to spread butter on and have with a hot cup of coffee….read more

Sticky Date Pudding, Gluten Free

Posted by in Arrowroot, Cakes, Gluten free, Grain free, Healthy Living, Paleo, Pudding

I am getting fascinated with arrowroot flour.  It is so versatile.  I only knew it as something Mama used to thicken gravies and soups.  It has been raining since yesterday and it is so cold that I wanted to eat a pudding.  As I do when such cravings hit me, I began searching for a recipe using stuff I had at home.  I had arrowroot powder.  I had organic honey and dates.  So pudding made of dates and honey was what I wanted.  The trick was to cook it without…read more
